The Iris pseudata hybrids are interspecific crossings of I. pseudacorus as a pollen recipient and I.ensata as a pollen donor. The original goal was to include the color yellow into the spectrum of the Japanese iris. Hiroshi Shimizu from Japan did important breeding pioneering work. He found Iris pseudacorus 'Gubijin' as a solid and very fertile pollen recipient from various Ensata varieties. In addition to the successful occurrence of yellow influences, he selected some offspring that showed a blue border around the yellow signal of the falls. From then on he referred to these as 'eyeshadow hybrids'.
The flowers of the Pseudata hybrids are in no way inferior to those
of the Japanese iris. The plants are robust, vigorous and less demanding. The Pseudatas available so far are all sterile. Because they don't set seeds, they can't spread uncontrollably. However, breeding work is being done to generate fertile pseudodata.
